Remember your first record?

Mine was "Captain Furface and the Adventures of the Giant Broink," circa 1979, or so.

Cot Damn, I love that record..

I guess I really didn't go out and buy that one..

The first one I actually bought was either Run DMC's Raising Hell in 1986 or Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" single.

      hola,

The First Record I Bought For Me (not to impress friends, girls, etc) was The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie.

I had bought other records by this point - Sister Sledge for Lesyln's Birthday, a Ted Nugget cassette tape for summer camp, etc - and I had received records from my parents and others as gifts - Captain and Tanelle, the Who's Tommy, Styx for the xmas when I was into Lord of the Rings, etc; but, the first record that I remember going to Tower records and actually buying was Bowie. And I still remember listening to it for the first time. So unlike anything I had heard before, totally surpased all of my expectations - blew me away to such an extent that I still do not think I have recovered.

I recently installed a turntable in my 4 year old sons room - he spends most of his time on Polyphonic Spree, Bob Marley, etc, but there is a copy of Bowie's masterpiece sitting in the stack - waiting to be discovered.

      Great topic.

      thanks
      davids

I'm new to vinyl collecting, but my 1st purchase was Massiv Attack's "100th Window". Around the same time I was given Amon Tobin's "Out From Out Where". I was hooked upon first contact with these vinyls.

Spider man vs. the Wolfman. It was a 45 which came with a comic book. The 45 told the story of the comic book. I was 4 when I got it and, miraculously, I still have it and its in playable condition.

Hansel and Gretel w/ music by Engelbert Humperdinck.

I still have this record and listen to it about once a year. It takes me back to childhood.

My dad was way into vinyl and taught me how to handle records at around four years old. Thanks Dad =)!

Anyone seen these? It was a big blue songbook guy that would hang out with li'l christians and have his way with them...no wait...that was the catholic version...teehee.

YES! My first record was Gary Numan's "The Pleasure Principle" (the one with "Cars"), also. That was way back in '79, I was 12. I remember sitting around with my friends trying to figure out how he made that snare kick sound like that. We had our theories, one was that he was hitting a trash can lid with a metal rod or something. Then one day I saw the video and he was just hitting a key on the synth and I was a little disappointed. But that's just testimony to how far ahead of his time Mr. Numan was.
I think my second album was "Musical Youth" with "Pass The Dutchie."

That is a good question.I cannot recall my FIRST record, yet my first PIVOTAL one was "Keep On Dancin",by Gary's Gang, because it marked my transition to all types of music, and doing more mixing than cutting and scratchin.

mine was also Rush - Caress of Steel

it was the only record i could afford at K-Mart. it was in the cut-out bin for 2.99. i was 10 yrs old. before i bought that record i played all of my father's. he was a DJ at Kent State back in the 60's and he had a nice collection of strange, fun stuff. i wore out the grooves on his Spike Jones record. Mr. Lucky and the Beach Boys' 'Endless Summer' were faves.

Mine was a gift On my 18th birthday.
It's a DIDO remix of "Hunter" and Take My Hand"
I adore to mix a record of whales singing that I found at the thrift store with "take my hand" It overlaps quite beautifully.

    First one I bought:
It's aphrodite, but it doesn't have a name printed on it.

Not a question I can answer easily. My mum let me borrow (i.e. have) so many of her records and also bought me so many of my own when I was little to listen to on my Fisher Price record player. I had LPs ranging from Blondie's "Parallel Lines" to Walt Disney's "Silly Symphony" not to mention several 45s like Jim Henson's "Fraggle Rock" and Huey Lewis and the News' "The Heart of Rock & Roll". :)

So, in actuality, I've always had records. Heh. However, I didn't buy my first real CD till 1996. That was Tangerine Dream. I purchsed it online at Music Blvd (which became CDNow).

It was the 45 rpm "Pineapple Princess" by Annette. I was deeply in love with her. Next I bought the 3 disc set "Hank Williams' Greatest Hits, Volume Two". Then Beethoven's Nine Symphonies conducted by Toscanini. I was 13 years old and it was 1961. I have always had very eclectic taste in music.

      Most likely
      The Jackson 5 - circa 1970
Partridge Family - all of them
      K-tel TV compilations.
Oh yes, those were some hot tunes.

wooops! That would be Jethro Tull - Thick As a Brick

also had a few Simply Red lps, as well as Zep and Pink Floyd.

My father was a classic rock junkie in the worst way.

my brother gave me his turntable and a crate of classic rock then tried to take it back when I learned how to make that scratching sound.
    I remember
    AC/DC-for those about to rock
    Jimi Hendrix-are you experienced?
    Led Zepplin-1 through 3
    Motley Crue-shout at the devil
    some aerosmith
    some van halen
then I stole my mom's temptations and beatle records
but the first record I bought with my own money was.....
    RunDMC-Raising Hell

My brother & I were very fortunate to have thoughtful & generous parents w/ great taste in music, though our family was far from wealthy.
We'd get 7" & 12" vinyl + cassette gifts from Dad almost every time he went to buy records for himself! That dude practically LIVED in Tower, Streetlight & Aquarius. I'd accompany him sometimes, but I'd get tired... he would stay for hours (sometimes diggin' for 5-6 hours at a time). Every now & then, He'd run into Bobby McFerrin (& other musicians) in these places. They'd talk about sides & other stuff. My Pops knew his stuff, man ;-)

His record collection was always been about 2000-3000 strong... my Mom wouldn't let him have more than that or there'd be nowhere for us to kick our feet up, so he'd sell or trade sides every so often. His taste was very eclectic; He turned me onto so many different genres.

Here are some of the rekkids we had in our collection:
Parliament: Mothership Connection / Aqua Boogie 7" /
Funkadelic: Uncle Jam Wants You / Hardcore Jollies / Cosmic Slop / One Nation Under A Groove 7"
Cameo: Cameosis / Alligator Woman / Feel Me / Knights of the Sound Table / Single Life
Earth Wind & Fire: That's The Way Of The World / Greatest Hits / I AM / Spirit / Faces
Stevie Wonder: Hotter Than July / Original Musiquarium / Songs in the Key of Life
    The Beatles: Abbey Road /
    Jackson 5: Triumph / Victory
Michael Jackson: Off The Wall / Thriller
    Prince: Dirty Mind / 1999 / Controversy / Parade / Soundtrack > Purple Rain /
The Time: The Time / What Time Is It?
Chaka Khan & Rufus: Master Jam / Rufusized
James Brown: Papa Don't Take No Mess 7" / Talkin' Loud Sayin' Nothing 7" / Live at the Apollo
    David Bowie: Scary Monsters
    Jim Carroll Band: Catholic Boy
    Peaches & Herb: 2 Hot
Isley Bros.: Go All The Way
    Grease Soundtrack
    Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack
Men At Work: Business As Usual
Musical Youth: The Youth Of Today
    Kiss: Dynasty / Unmasked
    Kraftwerk: Computer World
    Rolling Stones: Tattoo You
Donna Summer: Donna Summer ('82) / She Works Hard for the Money 12" featuring my Dad's childhood friend (saxophonist) Ernie Watts
Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?
Steve Martin: A Wild and Crazy Guy

Dang, we had SO many more . . . my brain is fried trying to remember them all.
